Registration for marriage involves a fee of 600 NIS (as of May 2002). Students, yeshiva pupils, soldiers in regular service, National Service personnel, new immigrants and welfare cases are entitled to a discount of up to 40%.

There is no recommended payment for the officiating rabbi though it is an accepted practice in Israel to give the rabbi a gift of between 500 and 2000 shekel. In addition, the couple should cover the rabbi’s travel expenses. Though this is an uncomfortable issue, make sure that it is raised when you meet your rabbi in order that everyone’s expectations are met.
