Educator

1) The Senior Educators Program, The Melton Centre for Jewish Education,
Hebrew University of Jerusalem

The program's goal is to develop a senior cadre for Jewish education in the Diaspora. Participants acquire a deeper knowledge of Israel and re-inforce their professional connection to Israeli educational institutions. In addition, the program offers them the opportunity to enrich their knowledge of Jewish studies and Jewish education, and improve their command of the Hebrew language. Participants also acquire professional tools in educational planning and development.

The Senior Educators' Program includes:

  1. A Summer Ulpan for participants whose knowledge of Hebrew is at the intermediate level;
  2. A two-week orientation seminar;
  3. Participation in academic studies at the Hebrew University within the MA curriculum;
  4. The development of a personal educational project with individual tutor guidance;
  5. Tours of Israel.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Diaspora Jewish educators who are engaged in either formal or informal education;
  • Candidates must hold a first degree;
  • Candidates are required to have a command of the Hebrew language (minimum level of gimmel-daleth in an Ulpan);
  • Candidates will have been in full-time employment in Jewish education for a minimum of four years;
  • The support of the above educational institution.

Program Length:

10 months (September through June), or 11 months for participants attending the Hebrew University's Summer Ulpan.

2) Program in Conjunction with Hebraica University, Mexico

This program is located in Mexico, Israel and cyberspace and aims to train educators as teachers of Hebrew and Jewish Studies. The curriculum integrates both courses and distance learning technology, through the Department for Jewish Zionist Education's eAcademy, which is based at Kiryat Moriah in Jerusalem.

The Program comprises three 1-year modules, offering specialization in a range of different subject areas in educational pedagogy:

  1. Tanach;
  2. Israel Studies;
  3. Contemporary Jewry;
  4. Hebrew Language.

Participants complete two three-week study periods in Israel, in conjunction with the Melton Centre for Jewish Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The Program offers enrichment courses in Judaism, as well as methodology for Hebrew Language teaching and Jewish Studies. Participants who complete all the requirements will be awarded a Teacher's diploma in their studies and specialized subject areas, under the auspices of Hebraica University, a recognized Jewish university in Mexico and Latin America. The program is also under the auspices of the Department for Jewish Zionist Education of The Jewish Agency for Israel and the L.A. Pincus Fund for Jewish Education. 

Candidate Requirements:

Young people from Jewish communities in Latin America (particularly the northern regions) aged 20-35, without academic qualifications, or lacking systematic knowledge in areas of Jewish Studies.

Program Length:

Three years, with modular specializations in each year.

3) The 'Melamed' Program, Argentina

This program operates in Argentina and educates towards an academic degree (BA) in Hebrew Language and Jewish Studies. The curriculum integrates both courses and distance learning technology, through the Department for Jewish Zionist Education's eAcademy, which is based at Kiryat Moriah in Jerusalem. Participants are required to complete an extended semester in Israel, under the auspices of Masa – Israel Journey, and in conjunction with the Melton Centre for Jewish Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The Program offers enrichment courses in Judaism, as well as methodology for Hebrew Language teaching and Jewish Studies. Participants who complete all the requirements will be awarded a Bachelor's degree in conjunction with a recognized national University in Argentina and Latin America. The program is also under the auspices of the Department for Jewish Zionist Education of The Jewish Agency for Israel and the L.A. Pincus Fund for Jewish Education. 

Program delivery and modules:

  1. Participants in Buenos Aires attend evening courses nightly at Bamah (the Jewish Education Center);
  2. Participants residing in smaller communities attend intensive two-day monthly seminars at Bamah.
  3. All participants follow distance learning courses, in conjunction with eAcademy and the Melton Centre for Jewish Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
  4. Participants are also required to complete a five-month semester in Israel, under the auspices of MASA-Israel Journey.

Candidate Requirements:

Young adults from Argentina, aged 18-30, without academic qualifications or lacking systematic knowledge in areas of Jewish Studies.

Three years

4) Teacher Training Programs under the Auspices of MASA-Israel Journey

The above programs are designed to develop a core of young educators for educational institutions around the Jewish world, and place emphasis on a significant period of study in Israel.

A. MASA-Melamed Program

Details of the program as given above. The program includes an extended period of study in Israel (5 months) as part of the integral three-year course in teacher training for Argentina.

In conjunction with the Melton Centre for Jewish Education at the HebrewUniversity of Jerusalem.

B. MASA-Shilove (Shiluv/Integrated Program)

Training program for young educators specializing in differentiated teaching and mainstreaming of children with learning disabilities in regular classrooms, in the framework of Jewish community education.

Length of program: 10 months.

In conjunction with the DavidYellinAcademicCollege of Education, Jerusalem.

C. MASA-Merhavim for Early Childhood Educators

Training program for educators in the sphere of Hebrew Language and Early Childhood Education. The Program includes the Chalav U'Dvash Project of the Department for Jewish Zionist Education at the Jewish Agency for Israel (Early Childhood Division).

Length of program: 5 months.

In conjunction with LevinskyTeachers' College, Tel Aviv.

D. MASA-Pedagogi (Educator Training)

This program is designed to foster the entry of young Jewish adults into careers in education, in Latin America. The Program consists of a foundation training in the principles of Jewish education, Jewish Studies, and Hebrew language teaching, over a period of 5 months. It also offers add-on programs for individualized specialization, including the Machon LeMadrichim (Institute for Youth Leaders from Abroad) at Kiryat Moriah, in Jerusalem, as well as other options for continuation around Israel, for up to an additional 5 months (10 months in all).
